Major: Mathematics

Career: Surveillance epidemiologist, Georgia Emerging Infections Program, Emory University/CDC

"Math skills are needed in every industry. I've always had an interest in health disparities and used my background in math to pursue a career in public health, which led me to epidemiology and biostatistics for my graduate degree. Math teaches you how to be an excellent problem solver in the real world."

Mathematics

Why study math at Geneseo?
The mathematics major combines a strong traditional math foundation with opportunities for student research, a successful adolescence education program, and preparation in applied mathematics and statistics. It challenges students to apply classroom learning and research to real-world problems. Students engage in hands-on, high-impact undergraduate research projects that many schools only offer at the graduate level, supported by faculty members who strive to develop strong mentoring relationships.

Mathematics has proven to be uniquely insightful for solving a myriad of problems in science, society, and our everyday lives. Graduates are well prepared for either employment or advanced studies and have entered careers in the insurance, financial management, computer, medical, or educational fields.
