Career: Salerno is a JD candidate at Columbia Law and a linguist at heart. Her keen interest in learning new languages and experimenting with interpretations in her native English has motivated her to pursue international law.

Why study global languages and cultures at Geneseo?

This major offers students the choice of three different tracks: French studies, Spanish studies, or French/Spanish for the professions. The professions track includes six separate focus areas designed to develop the language skills employers are actively seeking.

The global languages and cultures program enables students to count approved courses from outside the department toward their major requirements. Organizing the degree in this way makes it easy for students to double major in any of the focus areas. This innovative, interdisciplinary major provides solid preparation for graduate study and a wide variety of careers at home and abroad.

Program Highlights

Geneseo is the only SUNY college to offer a global languages and cultures major.
Class size is small, so students receive plenty of personal attention.
All full-time faculty hold a PhD and have extensive experience teaching in the US and abroad.
Geneseo offers many study abroad opportunities in Europe, Latin America, and Africa. Three annual department scholarships support study abroad.
Students may work one-on-one with professors on independent research; research is often presented at local, regional, and national conferences.
Students are eligible for membership in the Geneseo chapters of nationally accredited academic honor societies in French, German, Spanish, and foreign languages.
Many of the college’s recipients of Fulbright Awards, Gilman International Scholarships, and other prestigious fellowships and scholarships are language students.
Students have the opportunity provide free peer tutoring.

Summary

This study analyzes the cultural history of Spanish in Equatorial Guinea.

Abstract

This study reconstructs the glottopolitical and cultural history of Spanish in Equatorial Guinea, allowing us to analyze the actions taken by social groups regarding languages within the context created during colonization and continuing into the present. On one hand, these conditions reveal the power dynamics between European and African languages; on the other hand, they enable us to examine how these relationships were institutionalized in schools, government, religion, and the media. The book concludes with an analysis of institutional discourses surrounding ethnolinguistic identity, which evolves from "Equatorial Guinean Hispanicity" to "Afro-Hispanic and Bantu."

Xavier Canaple '27, who is pursuing a BA in French and a BS in Chemistry, as well as a minor in the Edgar Fellows Program, has been selected in a nationwide competition to receive a prestigious Joseph W. Yedlicka Scholarship from Pi Delta Phi National French Honor Society. A member of Geneseo's Mu Iota chapter, he will study French language and culture at IAU College in Aix-en-Provence, France, in summer 2025. The award includes tuition, travel expenses, housing, and board. In addition to his academic pursuits, Xavier is an avid singer who enjoys performing traditional French and Italian art songs. He plans on a career in pharmaceutical research. Earlier Geneseo winners of Pi Delta Phi summer scholarships were Robert Briwa '13, Lily (Wheeler) Gasiorek '14 , Yvonne Bennett '20, and Carley Salerno '23.

Gives students a well-rounded knowledge of a continent with almost 10 percent of the world’s population and more than 200 languages.

Why choose European studies at Geneseo?

This minor is an interdisciplinary study of Europe, from Great Britain to Russia and from Scandinavia to the Balkan regions. The European Union and non-affiliated countries will continue to influence political relations, climate change, and the economy for the foreseeable future. Courses are wide-ranging, encompassing various European languages, history, politics, philosophy, and cultures.
