SUNY Geneseo School of Business seniors Alex Hall and Patrick Climie found their niche at Geneseo in a nontraditional way that has allowed them to excel in the business world.

Two SUNY Geneseo faculty members have each received a $750 mini-grant from the Finger Lakes Project to jointly develop a sustainability curriculum project titled “Food Sustainability Across Disciplines.”

The Department of Physics and Astronomy has received a $420,000 award for the 2017-18 school year from the University of Rochester’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics in support of an ongoing collaborative research project titled “Nuclear and Plasma Diagnostics for the EP-OMEGA and MTW Laser System.”

How do you define happiness? Jim Allen, associate professor of psychology at SUNY Geneseo, has taken a critical look at that question in his recently published textbook titled “The Psychology of Happiness in the Modern World: A Social Psychological Approach.” Published by Springer, the book places a socio-cultural lens on the field by emphasizing economic and other social/structural factors that influence human happiness.

Twelve SUNY Geneseo students and two recent College alumni presented their Geneseo-mentored research projects Oct. 22-25 at the annual Geological Society of America (GSA) Meeting in Seattle, Wash.

Imam Khalid Latif, executive director and chaplain for the Islamic Center at New York University, will deliver SUNY Geneseo’s 2017 MacVittie Lecture Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. in the Doty Hall Recital Hall. His address, “Racialized Religion: Understanding Faith in the United States,” is free and open to the public.

Twelve SUNY Geneseo students presented their research projects Oct. 13-14 at the Council of Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC) Northeast Undergraduate Research Conference in Pennsylvania.

The annual fall concert of the Geneseo Chamber Singers and Spectrum Singers will have a unique tone this year featuring the world premiere of Glenn McClure’s '86/MSEd '11 new choral composition “Tremble,” based upon scientific data he gathered during a visit to Antarctica last year. The concert is at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22 in the Doty Hall Recital Hall and is free and open to the public.

Ten SUNY Geneseo students are serving as ambassadors in the College’s Center for Inquiry, Discovery and Development (CIDD) for the 2017-18 school year.

Alexis Leslie, a sophomore from Buffalo, N.Y., is in a study abroad program in Cape Town, South Africa this semester, thanks to a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship she recently earned. She is the 19th Geneseo student to win this State Department award since 2010 and the 21st overall.

Geneseo graduates Kiaya Rose Dilsner-Lopez '17 and Patrick McCormick ’15 have been awarded U.S. Student Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) awards to Brazil for 2018.

Maria Lima, professor of English and director of the college’s Comparative Literature Program, will deliver the James and Julia Lockhart Supported Professorship Lecture Sept. 25 at 5 p.m. in Doty Hall 300 (the Tower Room). Lima’s lecture title is “Reclaiming the Human: From the Bildungsroman to Neo-Slave Narratives.”

Patrick Buckley ’19, will launch his Discovery Cafe with three free public events this fall. The first talk, “A Series of Discrepant Events: Some Physics in Action,” presented by Kurt Fletcher, SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor of Physics & Astronomy, will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. at the Wadsworth Library on Center St., Geneseo.

Author and environmental activist Bill McKibben will deliver the 2017 Walter Harding Lecture Sept. 30 at 4 p.m. in Wadsworth Auditorium on the SUNY Geneseo campus.

Political Science Professor Jeff Koch will join USAF Academy in Colorado Springs for a one-year appointment as Distinguished Visiting Professor of political science.

Emily Rogers ’17 and SoJin Lee ’17 developed a friendship through the Speech Buddies program, where Emily helped SoJin hone her English skills.

It’s a typical spring morning at Sweet Arts Bakery on Main Street in Geneseo. Students, teachers and townspeople come and go: There’s laughter, there’s the clank of dishes, there’s conversation.
And with the noises as a backdrop, Glenn McClure ’86/MS.S.Ed ’11— composer, musician, humanities teacher, and adjunct lecturer in Geneseo’s English Department — talks of sounds and silence, thousands of miles away in Antarctica.

The opportunity for undergraduate students to participate in research has become an important part of Geneseo’s academic culture. Although many student participate in research during the academic year, summer is also a busy undergraduate research period for students. More than 60 students have been on campus this summer working in labs and elsewhere with their faculty mentors, thanks to support from the Geneseo Foundation in cooperation with the SUNY Research Council.

A recent visit to Lithuania’s Alytus College by Meredith Harrigan, associate professor of communication at SUNY Geneseo, has helped reinforce Geneseo’s involvement in globally networked learning (GNL).

Two SUNY Geneseo students were interviewed recently on the France 3 public television channel during their study abroad class’s visit to the Historial de la Grande Guerre (World War I museum) in Péronne, north of Paris.

Rising senior Kendon Bates ’18 presented his research earlier this summer at the International Disability Studies in Education (IDSE) conference in Minneapolis, Minn.

Barbara Welker, associate professor of anthropology at SUNY Geneseo, is among recent authors for the Open SUNY Textbooks initiative.

Kevin Militello, professor of biology, has been awarded a grant of nearly $460,000 from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The award will, in part, help fund undergraduate researchers who will work in Militello’s lab looking for new drug targets in the parasite that causes African Sleeping Sickness.

The State University of New York is among 11 schools or systems in the nation selected to participate in the 2017-18 OpenStax Institutional Partnership Program to encourage use of free, peer-reviewed textbooks on campus. The SUNY application, submitted by SUNY OER Services at SUNY Geneseo on behalf of the system, was among 42 applications for the program.

Five SUNY Geneseo faculty members, two professional staff members and a member of the college’s classified services are among recipients of Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence for the 2016-17 academic year. The system-wide honors recognize consistently superior professional achievement and encourages the ongoing pursuit of excellence.
