SUNY Geneseo is included in the newly released 2018 edition of The Princeton Review’s Guide to 399 Green Colleges. The College has consistently been included in the annual guide since it was first published in 2010.

October is Campus Sustainability Month at SUNY Geneseo and the College community is hosting a variety of lectures, workshops and events to raise awareness, spark discussion and promote personal involvement.

Xiuhtezcatl Martinez, a leader in the indigenous environmental activist community, will deliver the President’s 2018 Sustainability Lecture. Martinez will deliver “Roots of Revolution” on Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 2:30 p.m. in the MacVittie College Union Ballroom, on the Geneseo campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.

SUNY Geneseo President Denise A. Battles and Campus Auxiliary Services (CAS) will host the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony of Red Jacket Dining Complex. The ribbon cutting will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, September 21. The event will take place during SUNY Geneseo’s Homecoming and Family Weekend. A brief reception will take place at the Twisted Fork station within the dining complex.

As a cost-savings and sustainability effort, the College is replacing traditional lights on campus with Light Emitting Diode (LED) illumination. Forty-four projects have been completed in the switch-over since 2015, and several are in progress, according to George Stooks, assistant vice president for facilities and planning.

The Department of Student Life has redesigned the housing options on campus to more closely align with its educational priorities, which is to help ensure that Geneseo students are best prepared to build positive relationships and become socially responsible citizens and engaged learners.

Three researchers in the Department of Physics and Astronomy have received a $20,000 research initiation grant from the NASA/NY Space Grant Consortium.

American oceanographer and explorer David Gallo will deliver the keynote address for Geneseo’s two commencement ceremonies on May 12 in the Ira S. Wilson Ice Arena. The morning ceremony begins at 10 a.m.; the afternoon ceremony begins at 2 p.m.

Students will have the opportunity to develop stand-out skills and learn how to project an authentic leadership style during SUNY Geneseo’s eighth-annual Women’s Leadership Conference and Networking Dinner on Feb. 28.

Against a backdrop of national debate on the fate of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, mathematician Pamela Harris from Williams College will deliver a campus lecture titled “The Lonely Reality of an Academic Dreamer,” Jan. 25.

SUNY Geneseo’s "Day of Leadership and Service" celebrated the work and teachings of Martin Luther King Jr. Jan. 15 with a series of inter-generational and interfaith discussions, workshops, and community outreach projects. Some 153 participated in the day’s activities, including Geneseo students, Office for the Aging seniors, community volunteers and school-age students.

Organic garlic harvested from the Geneseo e-Garden is making its way to the plates of students, faculty and staff at the College. Food Studio North and Max Market, two of the newest on-campus restaurants, will be using the 120 pounds of garlic harvested from the e-Garden throughout the beginning of the spring semester.  

The College will host the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Leadership and Service on Monday, Jan. 15, 2018, with relevant addresses, workshops and activities that assist others in the community.

Geneseo- based startup company Verdimine has signed an exclusive license agreement with the Research Foundation for The State University of New York to employ a proprietary green chemistry process that improves safety and efficiency in manufacturing specialty chemicals across many industries.

SUNY Geneseo has been selected to participate in the prestigious Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program. The aim of the McNair Program is to increase the numbers of low-income, first-generation, and historically underrepresented undergraduates who pursue Ph.D. degrees. Diedre DeBose, director of Access Opportunity Programs, will serve as the McNair Scholars Program director.

Two SUNY Geneseo faculty members have each received a $750 mini-grant from the Finger Lakes Project to jointly develop a sustainability curriculum project titled “Food Sustainability Across Disciplines.”

Jordan Cimilluca '15 is a senior community development manager at the American Cancer Society (ACS) in Rochester, NY. She partners to organize cancer awareness and fundraising events with student organizations at area colleges.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy has received a $420,000 award for the 2017-18 school year from the University of Rochester’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics in support of an ongoing collaborative research project titled “Nuclear and Plasma Diagnostics for the EP-OMEGA and MTW Laser System.”

For well over 10 years, Geneseo students, faculty, staff and community residents have helped homeowners in the Biloxi area rebuild their homes and communities after Hurricane Katrina. Conducted through Livingston CARES, SUNY Geneseo’s non-profit humanitarian organization, these efforts serve as one of the College’s longest-running relief commitments.

At the Rochester Fringe Festival earlier this fall, Arianna Miller ‘18, Isabel Owen ‘19, Jennifer Galvao ’19, and Jasmine Cui ‘20 read a set of poems and a short story. Their performance set, “Write Like a Girl,” was selected for its overarching message of empowerment and strength.

Lake of Betrayal, a documentary that explores the history of Kinzua Dam and its effect on the Seneca Indians whose lands were taken for the reservoir, will be shown at Geneseo’s Riviera Theater on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. A Q&A session with the filmmakers and Michael Oberg, SUNY Distinguished Professor of History, will follow the screening. The event is free and open to the public.

SUNY Geneseo demonstrates a commitment to building a community that uses resources responsibly through our campus facilities, including our new construction and renovation. The college also incorporates innovative technologies such as geothermal wells and rainwater collection.

The State University of New York at Geneseo has been named among the most environmentally responsible colleges in the United States and Canada by “The Princeton Review.”

On Wednesday, Oct. 4, David O. Carpenter will present the President’s Sustainability Lecture, “Is the Human Race Sustainable After the Age of Chemicals?”

Author and environmental activist Bill McKibben will deliver the 2017 Walter Harding Lecture Sept. 30 at 4 p.m. in Wadsworth Auditorium on the SUNY Geneseo campus.
