In recognition of the fact that students find their way to one of Philosophy's programs in many different ways, effective Fall 2025 we have removed all prerequisites on all PHIL courses. At the same time, we recommend the following:

• Students who wish to take PHIL 420, 430, 440, or 445 should have had one prior PHIL course.
• Students who wish to take PHIL 493 or 497 should  have had two prior PHIL courses.

Students should discuss their preparation for these courses with their academic advisor and/or the Chair of the Department of Philosophy.
